Within two days the Leduc area was hit with two motor vehicle collisions
claiming two lives along Highway 19.
“It’s very sad,” said Const. Deanna Haggerty, media relations officer with the
Leduc RCMP detachment.
She added that at the time of the collisions, there was extremely poor winter
driving conditions.
The first fatal collision occurred March 9 at 7:52 a.m. near Rabbit Hill Road
that claimed the life of 52-year-old Debora Anne Hay, from Devon.
According to the news release, she was heading eastbound on Highway 19 where she
lost control, causing the vehicle to spin and cross over the centre line where
her vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer unit. Hay died at the scene and was
the lone occupant of the vehicle. The driver of the truck didn’t sustain any
injuries from the collision.
The second fatal collision took the life of Lois Both, 35 from Devon. The
collision took place along the same highway, close to the location of the first
collision, on March 10 at 9:40 p.m.
According to the news release, an RCMP investigation revealed that the truck
driven by Both was travelling west on the highway when she lost control and
crossed the centre line colliding with an eastbound
pick-up truck.
The two occupants of the eastbound truck were injured and transported to the
hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Highway 19 was closed for several hours due to the collision and extremely poor
road conditions were a factor.
Haggerty said that due to the bad driving conditions with the recent snowfall,
the RCMP also attended six other injury-related collisions and 29 non-injury
collisions, which is very high. Normally, she said they get reports of one to
three per week.
The two motor vehicle fatalities occurred during different times of the day,
early morning and evening, and Haggerty would like to remind people of three
factors to consider when faced with driving in bad conditions –– visibility,
traction and driving style.
Reduced visibility and traction are the primary factors that often make winter
driving more difficult and challenging. However, it’s the driving style that
motorists adopt when dealing with those factors.
The RCMP recommend to give yourself enough time to clear snow, ice and frost
from all windows of the vehicle, inside and out, as well as ensure that wiper
blades are clean.
When it comes to traction, they recommend drivers be savvy, calm and alert when
travelling in winter road conditions. It’s also a good idea to give other
drivers a wide berth in the case of breaking and avoiding any potential
collisions. And it’s also important to remember to never use cruise control when
driving on bad roads and the RCMP also ask drivers to have an emergency kit to
ensure you’re prepared on the highway.
